No matter the size or style, these are the best crossovers you can buy

More people are buying crossovers than any other type of vehicle, and that means automakers are rushing to churn out new models and snatch up a larger share of the market. What makes the best crossovers so irresistible? Not every buyer is looking for the same thing, but among their more attractive characteristics, crossovers provide greater visibility, utility, and styling diversity than sedans – which used to wear the sales crown.

Unlike SUVs, crossovers also ride on lightweight car-based platforms, meaning fuel economy is nearly as good as sedans. Tremendous competition makes the task of sifting through these crossover options that much harder. Fortunately, we’re here to return your sanity.

This year, we’ve tested subcompact, compact, midsize, and luxury crossover models from every major brand. Several of these vehicles impressed us, but only a handful of them blew us away. Here are our top picks.

Our pick

Jaguar F-Pace

Why should you buy this: It drives even better than it looks.

2018 Jaguar F-PACEThe F-Pace’s styling, performance, and premium interior outclass German rivals.

Who’s it for? Luxury buyers who are tired of the same German car options.

How much will it cost? £40,990 Why we picked the Jaguar F-Pace: It’s not difficult to find a beautiful sports car, motorcycle, or premium sedan, but asking for a gorgeous crossover is a tall order.

Despite the swollen number of options, crossovers tend not to look nearly as sleek as lower riding vehicles. However, Jaguar’s head of design, Ian Callum, was apparently up to the challenge when he molded the F-Pace. The F-Pace certainly isn’t first to market – in fact, the luxury crossover segment was fairly stacked before the UK automaker introduced their crossover in 2016.

However, most will forgive the wait upon seeing the car’s curvaceous bodywork. Inspired by the F-Type’s stunning physique, the F-Pace manages to look even more upscale than its German luxury rivals. Better yet, it performs like the agile cat after which it is named.

Powering the F-Pace is a 3.0-liter supercharged V6 that comes in two flavors of tune: 340 horsepower or 380hp. There’s also a 2.0-liter diesel on offer with 180hp and 318 pound-feet of torque. All models utilize a ZF eight-speed automatic and are available with all-wheel drive.

Though it sits higher off the ground than the XE upon which it’s based, the F-Pace handles nearly as well in tighter corners. Inside, the Jag features a wonderfully comfortable cabin. Rich leather, ergonomic seats, and an intuitive 10.2-inch infotainment system are just some of the highlights.

In short, the F-Pace checks every box on the crossover list, and even creates a few new ones to keep the competition at bay. Read more here

The best midsize crossover

Mazda CX-9

Why should you buy this: It’s quick, efficient, and handsome.

The best midsize crossover2018 Mazda CX-9Mazda’s CX-9 is a joy to drive and has styling that will make owners proud.

Who’s it for? Those who prefer the best, not the most popular. How much will it cost? £31,520

Why we picked the Mazda CX-9: Remember how I said it’s not easy to find a sexy crossover? Well, let’s say Jaguar’s F-Pace isn’t the only exception.

Mazda’s CX-9 is a midsize crossover with attraction written all over it. The seven-seater is by far Mazda’s boldest crossover yet, and its fresh Kodo styling cues will blend into smaller models to come. While competing automakers fear that daring designs could discourage some buyers, Mazda is confident that more consumers will love it than hate it.

As the world’s most fuel-efficient automaker (an honor Mazda has earned since 2013), you can be sure the brand’s SkyActiv lightweight engineering has worked its way into every part of the CX-9. It starts with a stellar modular platform and all-wheel drive system. Add to that a 2.5-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (yes, four-cylinder), and the CX-9 is ready for primetime.

250hp and 310 lb-ft of torque are channeled through a six-speed automatic transmission on 93 octane gas, but those who run regular 87 octane fuel will only have 227 horses at their disposal (torque figures remain the same). More surprising than a good looking, fun-to-drive Mazda (that’s kind of what they do best) is one that’s luxurious. An appealing interior layout with quality materials is standard on the CX-9, but a new range-topping Signature Edition adds amenities like Japanese rosewood, Nappa leather, and LED accent lighting.

If you don’t want to shell out £44K for the Signature, lesser trims are still very well equipped for the money. Read more here

The best compact crossover

Volvo XC40 Why should you buy this: Contemporary European practicality, European styling, user-friendliness.

The best compact crossover2017 Honda CR-VThe 2018 Volvo XC40 offers elegant, contemporary European design and practicality with a smooth ride, near-luxury appointments, and easy use…

Who’s it for? Those who want the nicest and easiest compact crossover.

How much will it cost? £35,200 Why we picked the Volvo XC40: Sitting at the top of the Best Compact Crossover category is the all-new 2018 Volvo XC40, which we briefly drove not too long ago.

We love the Volvo’s ability to charm not just its occupants, but all those seeing you pull up at your destination. The XC40’s purely contemporary and elegant European design is easy on the eyes, yet very 21st-century. And the human-centric and driver-friendly interior makes time spent traveling in the XC40 less of a chore.

It’s certainly geared more toward comfort than sport and performance. But while it may not be as much of a thrill as the BMW X1, its refinement and smooth ride check all the boxes for a competent near-luxury crossover. With the XC40, Volvo also seeks to break the traditional “three-year lease” ownership cycle for a subscription service to use their vehicles.

Depending on location, the XC40 also comes with Care by Volvo. It’s access to a bespoke range of digital concierge services such as refueling, cleaning, service pick-up and drop-off, and more, all with hopes to minimize the traditional hassles that come with opening and operating a vehicle. The best luxury crossover

Volvo XC90

Why should you buy this: Volvo’s XC90 defines the word “elegance.”

The best luxury crossover2017 Volvo XC90Volvo’s XC90 luxury crossover is efficient, stunning inside and out, and priced to steal sales from BMW, Mercedes-Benz, and Audi.

Who’s it for? Long-time German luxury buyers who want an upgrade.

How much will it cost? £45,750 Why we picked the Volvo XC90: Until the new XC90 went on sale, Volvo was floating along aimlessly.

On paper, the company competed with premium brands like BMW, Mercedes-Benz, Audi, and Lexus, but in reality, its products were seriously outclassed. The redesigned XC90 crossover changed all that, and set the stage for future Volvos (the S90 and V90 most immediately) to adequately challenge their segment competitors. From first glance, the XC90 demands attention.

Its flowing body panels, sharp LED headlights, and squared shoulders instantly validate its luxury credentials. Base on the Swedish automaker’s new Scalable Product Architecture (SPA), the XC90 feels far lighter than its respectably slim 4,400-pound figure would suggest. As you jockey the electrically assisted steering, the crossover contains its body motions majestically, never disturbing the plush ride quality for up to seven passengers.

Speaking of life inside the XC90, Volvo’s interior design is now at the top of its class. Porous wood grain, brushed metals, and some of the softest leather we’ve ever felt is massaged in a gorgeous layout. It’s so easy to coast along in comfort that you might forget the XC90 is available with 316hp from a supercharged and turbocharged four-cylinder engine or 400hp (and 472 lb-ft of torque) from a plug-in hybrid powertrain.

Add to all this Volvo’s celebrated safety standards (due to industry-first technologies) and the XC90 is a knockout. Read more here

The best subcompact crossover

Jeep Renegade

Why should you buy this: Adventure-ready looks and performance.

The best subcompact crossover2017 Jeep Renegade SportJeep’s Renegade may look like a box with wheels, but its voluminous interior and clever AWD system.

Who’s it for? Those who like to maximize utility and time outside. How much will it cost? £17,995

Why we picked the Jeep Renegade: If I were to tell you that a Fiat is great off-road, you’d probably laugh, but if I said the same about a Jeep, you might just say, “duh.” Therefore, what should we make of the Fiat 500L-based Jeep Renegade? With all-wheel drive instead of four-wheel drive, a cutesy design, and an economy car price tag, one could mistake this Jeep for a re-badged poser.

Fortunately, however, the Renegade has what it takes to tackle the trails. It’s possible to get a front-wheel drive-only Renegade, but the real fun starts with Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control and AWD system with a Power Transfer Unit. Unlike permanent AWD systems, the rear axle can be detached for better fuel economy.

Even AWD models achieve up to 31 mpg on the highway. For serious off-roading, the Trailhawk edition adds reduction gears on the front and rear axles, skid plates, a 20:1 crawl ratio, and 8.7 inches of ground clearance. Power is provided by either a turbocharged 1.4-liter four-cylinder, mated to a six-speed manual or nine-speed automatic, or a 2.4-liter turbo four-cylinder connected exclusively to the auto-box.

While the Renegade can’t be called quick, its got enough grunt for moderate trails and acceptable passing power around town. Ride quality is quite good for a subcompact, and shifts via the manual gearbox are smooth. Inside, the Renegade has ample passenger space (headroom, legroom, and shoulder width), and even the trunk has generous cargo capacity.

Cabin material quality is excellent, and it’s easy to spot Jeep’s attention to detail. The Renegade is more than just the most rugged in its subcompact class; it’s the best product, period. Our full review

The best performance crossover

Porsche Macan Turbo

Why should you buy this: It’s literally the Porsche of small crossovers.

The best performance crossover2017 Porsche Macan TurboThe Macan Turbo is a seriously quick small crossover that can still serve as a practical daily driver.

Who’s it for? Those who like to maximize utility but still have fun.

How much will it cost? £77,200+ Why we picked the Porsche Macan Turbo: It may not be a 911, but the smaller of Porsche’s two crossovers is among the sportiest vehicles of its type.

Like the larger Cayenne, the Macan tries hard to live up to the Porsche name. But more compact proportions make the Macan a much more probable canyon carver. The Macan Turbo is the top-of-the-line version, and it offers performance to rival some sports cars.

Its 3.6-liter, twin-turbocharged V6 produces 400 hp and 406 lb-ft. Porsche says that will get the Macan Turbo from 0 to 60 mph in 4.4 seconds with the available Sport Chrono Package, and on to a top speed of 164 mph. An optional Performance Package boosts output to 440 hp and 442 lb-ft, cutting the 0 to 60 mph time by 0.2 seconds, and increasing top speed by 5 mph.

Getting the most out of the Macan Turbo admittedly requires selecting a long list of options, including the Sport Chrono and Performance Packages, as well as the active suspension and torque-vectoring system. With all of that hardware, it can hang with Porsche’s more traditional sports cars. But even without it, the Macan Turbo is still a competent small crossover with a sporty character.

How we test

The Digital Trends automotive team scrutinizes vehicles on the road through a comprehensive testing process. We examine the qualities of the exterior and interior and judge them based on our expertise and experience in the context of the vehicle’s category and price range. Entertainment technology is thoroughly tested, as well as most safety features that can be tested in controlled environments.

Test drivers spend extensive time behind the wheel of the vehicles, conducting real-world testing, driving them on highways, back roads, as well as off-road and race tracks when applicable.

Helpful advice

Some of you may still be hung up on the ‘crossover’ versus ‘SUV’ terminology. Unfortunately, automakers tend to use both terms interchangeably, so your confusion is understandable. It’s mostly the fault of marketing departments: brands choose to describe their vehicles based on public sentiment more than accurate descriptions.

In this case, calling any of these vehicles we’ve listed “SUVs” would be incorrect. Here’s why: crossovers start with a car’s “unibody” architecture, which simply means the body of the car and its frame, or “foundation,” are a single piece. SUVs use a “body on frame” make-up that links two independent pieces together.

This is really the only distinction between the two cars, but the side effects of unibody compared to body-on-frame are significant. A unibody is lighter, which leads to better fuel efficiency, agility, and a softer ride. Meanwhile, a heavier “body on frame” design is far more durable both in terms of rust and when driven on high-impact terrain.

Now that you know the basic differences (and if you want a more in-depth explanation, read this), you just need to decide how you’ll use your vehicle. Planning to do a lot of off-roading or towing? You’re looking for an SUV.

Need something efficient, comfortable, and more affordable?

A crossover is the right choice.

With that covered, if you’ve made it to the bottom of this article and now know you need an SUV, we’d suggest reviewing our top SUV picks.

The best sports cars you can buy

Sports cars represent the pinnacle of driving pleasure. Practicality is for crossovers and sedans; driver assistance technology is for commuter cars; the best sports cars arrange a passionate love affair between man and machine. There are subcategories within every vehicle segment, but no more so than among sports cars.

The design, performance, and usability spectrum is vast, with each automaker tailoring their halo models to a well-defined buyer group. For this reason, it’s difficult to say one sports car is better than every other. Instead, we’ve decided to pick our favorites among five categories, with five unique consumer personas.

Our pick

Why should you buy this: It’s the everyday supercar.

2017 Audi R8 V10 PlusAudi’s R8 V10 Plus is the supercar for all occasions.

Who’s it for: Those who want high performance without sacrificing comfort.

How much will it cost: £189,900 Why we picked the Audi R8 V10 Plus The 2017 Audi R8 is an anomaly.

Audi has built a car that’s as refined as a luxury two-door with the power of a hypercar. The low-slung coupe uses sharp creases, carbon-fiber accents, and a mid-engine layout to distinguish itself from lesser sports cars, but it doesn’t command attention in the same way as rivals. Its 5.2-liter V10 delivers 610 horsepower and 413 pound-feet of torque to all four wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Acceleration is blistering: 0 to 60 mph takes less than 3.0 seconds and top speed is a towering 205 mph. Within the cabin, occupants are treated to a magnificent engine wail and class-leading convenience features. Audi’s 12.3-inch Virtual Cockpit display gives drivers access to every vehicle function and reduces clutter.

Audi Drive Select adjusts suspension damping to transform ride quality from mellow to aggressive in an instant. At the sub-£200K price point, the Audi R8 V10 Plus invites challenges from McLaren’s 570S, Porsche’s 911 Turbo S, Acura’s NSX, Aston Martin V12 Vantage S, and Mercedes-AMG GT R. Each vehicle is astoundingly quick, attractive, and desirable, but the R8 is the only supercar that’s as thrilling to pummel on a track as it is to dawdle through a neighborhood.

The best muscle car

Why should you buy this: It’s a major performance bargain.

The Best Muscle Car2017 Ford Mustang Shelby GT350RSupercar track performance for the price of an entry-level luxury car.

Who’s it for: Track-day enthusiasts How much will it cost: £63,495 Why we picked the Ford Mustang Shelby GT350R

In many ways, automotive enthusiasts have the never-ending rivalry between Mustang and Camaro to thank for the ultra high performance muscle cars we see today. What once was a horsepower war has now become a battle for faster lap times. It’s a freaky world we live in where a Camaro (in Z/28 guise) can match a Porsche 911 GT3.

And the odd matchups will become more bizarre, especially since Ford’s Mustang Shelby GT350R has exceeded even the Camaro Z/28’s lofty performance threshold. While its true that Shelbys of years past owe their performance to their engines, the GT350 is only partly defined by its powertrain, which is more impressive considering this is one of the best motors Ford has ever built. Engineers wrung 526hp and 429 lb-ft of torque roar from a brand new 5.2-liter flat-plane crank V8 motor.

No forced induction, just the most powerful naturally aspirated motor Ford has ever produced – one that boasts a redline of 8,250 rpm. Beyond its engine, the GT350R is differentiated from the regular Mustang by a 6-speed Tremec manual transmission, Torsen limited-slip differential, Ford’s MagneRide magnetic dampers, 15.5-inch front brake rotors with 6-piston Brembo calipers, 14.9-inch rear discs with 4-piston calipers, and lowered ride height. Carbon-fiber aerodynamics and wheels also save weight.

All this adds up to one of the most capable track cars at any price. The fact that £60,000 grants you performance to rival some of the fastest cars in the world is confounding. Comparing the Shelby GT350/R to any preceding Mustang is like contrasting a Cheetah with a Dachshund.

Sure, they can both run, but that’s where their similarities end. Our 2016 Performance Car of the Year

The best grand tourer

Why should you buy this: It’s a sports car that won’t leave you exhausted at the end of a long drive.

The best grand tourer2018 Aston Martin DB11 V8The Aston Martin DB11 combines traditional British style and character with modern engineering.

Who’s it for: James Bond wannabes How much will it cost: £198,000+

Why we picked the Aston Martin DB11 The DB11 is Aston’s first clean-sheet design in over a decade, and it shows. While it still looks like an Aston Martin, and has the performance to back up those looks, this is a distinctly 21st century automobile.

Whether you choose Aston’s own 5.2-liter twin-turbocharged V12 or the Mercedes-AMG-sourced 4.0-liter twin-turbo V8, the DB11 has plenty of muscle. The “entry-level” V8 model has 503 hp and 513 lb-ft. Aston says it will do 0 to 60 mph in 4.0 seconds, and reach a top speed of 187 mph.

Upgrade to the V12, and you get 600 hp and 516 lb-ft, shaving 0.1 second off the 0 to 60 mph sprint, and allowing for a top speed of 200 mph. The bodywork is gorgeous and doesn’t compromise on aerodynamic performance. Aerodynamic downforce is important for generating tire grip, but Aston didn’t want to mess up the DB11’s clean lines with protruding spoilers and splitters.

So designers created channels in the bodywork to direct airflow around the car in the most advantageous way possible. The DB11 is also a true grand tourer, capable of covering long distances at high speeds without wearing its driver out. Contrasting the Spartan interiors of some sports cars, the DB11’s cabin is genuinely luxurious.

The car is set up for spirited driving, but the ride is still fairly comfortable. Our first drive impressions

The best exotic car

Why should you buy this: For big style, backed up by big performance.

The Best Exotic Car2016 McLaren 570S CoupeThe McLaren 570S is a finely tuned performance weapon wrapped in elegant bodywork.

Who’s it for: Trend-setters How much will it cost: £184,900

Why we picked the McLaren 570S As kids, our car fantasies lead to million-dollar feats of engineering. While these elite vehicles are certainly deserving of our affection, the adult versions of ourselves know there’s greatness to be had for hundreds of thousands of dollars less.

The McLaren 570S nails the mark of tremendous performance and style without costing as much as a beach house. With P1-inspired design language, the 570S is a gorgeous tribute to British artistry. Its swooping lines also translate to aerodynamic efficiency.

Air streaks around the sports car’s body as its mid-mounted 3.8-liter twin-turbocharged engine sends power to the rear wheels.

562hp and 443 lb-ft of torque translate to a 0 to 60 mph sprint of 3.1 seconds and a top speed of 204 mph. Handling is nothing short of astounding. Dual wishbones and anti-rollbars front and rear pair with a lightning-quick adaptive damping system and Pirelli PZero Corsa tires to control body movement.

To keep performance in check, Bosch-designed electronic stability control can go from invasive to dormant, while a brake-based torque-vectoring system applies power to the wheel or wheels with most grip. McLaren’s Sport Series coupe is priced in Audi’s R8 V10 Plus and Lamborghini Huracan LP 580-2 territory. It’s performance and styling is among the best in its segment, but daily drivers might prefer the plush ride of the Audi.

Our review

The best affordable performance car

Why should you buy this: Because power isn’t everything in a sports car.

The Best Affordable Performance Car2017 Chevrolet Corvette Grand Sport

Who’s it for: Those who want to master the basics. How much will it cost: £26,255 Why we picked the SB© toyota “GT” 86 and Subaru BRZ.

Despite being named differently, the SB© toyota “GT” 86 and Subaru BRZ are quintessentially the same vehicle, minus some tweaks here and there. But they are prime examples as to how sports cars aren’t all about straight-line speed and neck-snapping performance. Handling is also part of the experience, in addition to acceleration.

And if you want a picture-perfect idea of how a proper, rear-wheel-drive sports coupe should handle, without overwhelming speed, look no further than either of these two. Because of their lightweight and compact size, front-engine, rear-wheel drive, with a helical limited slip differential, a six-speed manual option, and 50/50 weight distribution, the result is sharp and balanced handling that you can’t quite get anywhere else at this price point. From professionals and amateurs alike, these two became an instant favorite in sports car world, especially for its sticker price of less than £30,000.

You won’t win many traffic light drags with its 205 horsepower and 156 pound-feet of twist but its naturally aspirated boxer engine is eager and revtastic four-cylinder perfection and a lesson in throttle and brake control. There are compromises. If long car distances or carrying more than a passenger happens often, you will find its sporty bucket seats might cause your back to ache after hours and limited space.

But sports cars aren’t meant to be practical! For what it is, however, you get just enough space for you, plus one, and both of your things for a weekend.
