Everything you need to know about The Crown season 3

If, like us, you’re already eagerly awaiting the next season of Netflix’s hit drama The Crown – you’re in luck because details about series three are already emerging.

Series two charted the turbulent relationship between the Queen and Prince Philip, as well as their differing opinions on how their son, Prince Charles, should be raised. It also saw Princess Margaret strike up a romance with the complicated photographer Tony Armstrong-Jones.

So, what’s up next in series three?

The Crown season 3: What’s it going to be about?

We know that the upcoming series will jump to the 1970s, when the Queen and Prince Philip are in their 50s.

Suzanne Mackie, a producer for the show, revealed in 2017 that the latest series will introduce Camilla Parker Bowles, who Prince Charles met at a polo match in 1971.

Whilst it’s not been confirmed, there is a chance the series will also introduce Princess Diana.

If seasons one and two are anything to go by, series three will span around 7 or 8 years, which means we could be seeing a depiction of the late Princess, who initially met Charles in 1977.

However The Crown creator Peter Morgan has suggested this isn’t the case.

“The Diana stuff… I haven’t figured out what I’m going to do with her if I ever get that far,” Morgan told Vanity Fair.

“I’ve mapped out what might be a third season.

If she were to be introduced, it’d probably have to wait until the fourth.”

Aside from the women in Prince Charles’ life, season three will also focus on the breakdown of Princess Margaret and Lord Snowdon’s marriage. (Image: Netflix)

“In season three, without giving anything away – it’s on the record, it’s history – we’ll see the breakup of this extraordinary marriage between Margaret and Snowdon,” The Crown’s historian Robert Lacey told Town & Country.

“This season, you see how it starts, and what a strange character, a brilliant character Snowdon was,” he added. MORE: EVERYTHING YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT VICTORIA SEASON 3

The Crown season 3: Who’s going to be in it?

Very excitingly, it’s been announced Olivia Colman will take over from Claire Foy and play the part of Queen Elizabeth II for series three as well as four.

The actress, perhaps best known for her roles in Broadchurch and her Golden Globe-winning performance in The Night Manager, said of her casting that she’s “ridiculously excited.”

While Olivia is the only confirmed new cast member for series three, there’s speculation that Helena Bonham Carter will play the role of an older Princess Margaret.

Outlets like Variety have been reporting on the news Helena has been cast by showrunner Peter Morgan – and we hope it’s true! The rumour was fuelled when Vanessa Kirby, who played Princess Margaret in seasons one and two, posted a picture on Instagram of herself with Bonham Carter.

Currently it’s unclear who will play other key roles like Prince Philip, the Queen Mother, Prince Charles, Lord Snowdon and Camilla Parker Bowles.

Speaking to Vanity Fair, the show’s casting director Nina Gold explained why casting the drama this time around is proving challenging. “Not only are we casting real-life characters… but as we get closer to the present day, many of these people are very much alive.

So we have to honor them by picking the right actor to play them–while making a link between the actors who played these characters in the first seasons,” she explained.

The Crown season 3: When’s it going to be released?

That remains to be seen for now. But, seasons one and two were released in November 2016 and December 2017, respectively, so that suggests we might see series three hit Netflix in the final months of 2018?

One can hope.
